My plein air group held our annual season kick-off meeting at the Mira Vista Country Club on Saturday where one of our painters has a membership. Afterwards, I sat on a bench in the sun and sketched the clubhouse, putting green and all the cute little golf carts.

Although I prefer jeans to dress up and agree with Thoreau’s quote: “Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes,” the club has a dress code that prohibits denim. So it was fun seeing how nicely the paint-spattered artists I’m used to seeing at our painting sessions can clean up, even if it meant I had to dress up too.

Our plein air schedule starts up again next month. Last year I only sketched at our paintouts but this year I’ve committed to dragging my oil painting supplies again and giving actual plein air painting another try. But if I still find it too frustrating to stand in one spot instead of exploring the locations, I’ll go back to sketching.

The widescreen is a good shape for your golf pictures. Lovely. Do you actually play golf? My beloved played four times a week until his heart played up and he just threw it all in. Now only plays short course occasionally with a friend or the kids.

Hi Wendy, No, never played golf and never had any interest in it. I suppose it’s kinda like painting in that it takes a lot of concentration and focus plus you’re outdoors…but it just looks so boring! I’m sorry to hear your beloved’s heart doesn’t permit him to do the things he loves. I guess we just have to be flexible and find new fun when old ones are no longer possible. Jana

Looks like a wonderful day to be out sketching! I’m with you, dragging all that oil stuff sure cuts down on the spontaneity and fun!

Sounds like a plan Jana! Love your sketches but it will be fun to see some plein air oils!!!

Love your country club sketches. Looks like such a beautiful day. I am curious how long it takes you to complete a sketch, like the first one? I look forward to your oil paintings, but hope to see more sketching as well!

I think I spent about an hour or so drawing and then a little more time painting the two-page spread. Time kind of disappears when I’m drawing so I’m not quite sure. I’m getting back to oil painting and have some to post…just haven’t gotten around to cleaning up the photos yet. Jana
